The Disney announce that they will not remove the gay scene for Malaysian release despite a request from censors.
The remake of Disney Beauty and the Beast, which stars Emma Watson had been scheduled to open in cinemas in Malaysian in Thursday, March 16, 2017 but the Disney postponed the opening earlier this week after the country's Film Censorship Board said it would only be approved if the scene was cut.
According to Disney, they moved the film's release date on March 30 to give time to board to make a decision. However, the studio told BBC that the movie will not remove its gay scene.
Bill Condon is the director of the movie and he said "“Can I just say, I’m sort of sick of this,” explained the 61-year-old to the publication. “Because you’ve seen the movie — it’s such a teeny thing, and it’s been overblown.”
Malaysia is very strict when it comes to homosexuality and homosexual characters can only be showed if portrayed negatively.
In the new version of Beauty and the Beast, LeFou, played by Josh Gad, the sidekick of Gaston, played by Luke Evans. LeFou is confused about his sexuality. In his scene in the movie, he dances with another man(the gay scene).
Although, the movie has a controversy, it still a blockbuster in so many countries.
